Cycling around Bishop's Castle and Beyond

Exploring Scenic Routes and Hidden Trails

One of the best ways to enjoy Bishop's Castle and Beyond is by bike. So, whether you’re looking for a peaceful ride to soak up some scenery or looking for something more challenging, you'll find a cycle route for every age and ability here. As a popular destination for cyclists, it offers stunning landscapes, varied terrain and links to both the Shropshire & Welsh hills. The routes pass through towns, villages and hamlets with the opportunity to great local pubs and cafes.


The Long Mynd Motivator – 20 miles

Offering stunning views of the Onny Valley, this route begins at Bishop’s Castle and takes you past several of the fine pubs in the area. Mainly via quiet lanes and country roads, this is a great route and can be lengthened or shortened depending on your preference.

The Full Monty – 20 miles

A figure of eight route that begins from Bishop’s Castle Community College and takes you through the delightful town of Montgomery. With some steep gradients, the route crosses the English/Welsh border six times and is a great day out.

The Half Monty – 11 miles

This route follows the lower loop of the figure eight from the above ride and begins in Bishop’s Castle and takes you through Bishop’s Moat, believed to be the site of the original Bishop’s Castle. It passes through Pentre and offers stunning scenery and a peaceful ride.

The Clun Challenge – 17 miles

Taking you up to the Iron Age hill fort at Bury Ditches, this hill circular route can be challenging. Riding through woodland, there is also the option for a short distance on a track for mountain bikers. With spectacular views and the chance for a stop in the picturesque town of Clun, it’s well worth a try. A 21-mile flatter route is also available.

The Anchor Adventure – 28 miles

A challenging circular route that takes you along the Kerry Ridgeway and offers magnificent views. It passes by the Cantlin Stone, the burial place of a local pedlar who died in 1691. If you’re on a mountain bike you can take the short cut which reduces the route to 26 miles.

Bishop’s Castle Cracker – 30 miles

Beginning from The Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, this route takes you through several local towns and villages, including Bishop’s Castle, Clun and Clungunford. Mainly via quiet country roads this course can be completed in approximately five hours and is a great way to explore the local area.

The Kerry Ridgeway – 15 miles

Follow the path of the ancient drovers as they travelled between the borders from Shropshire to Powys. This peaceful route takes you along country roads, tracks and bridleways and offers some stunning scenery along the way.
