High on the hill, dominating this pretty Georgian town is Montgomery Castle. Built in 1223 on the orders of Henry III, it was to deter the growing power of Welsh prince Llwelyn ap Lorwerth, (Llwelyn the Great). With its sophisticated design, the castle survived many attacks only succumbing to Parliamentarians during the Civil War. It was demolished in 1649 leaving what you see today.
